Fish identification
Posted on: 27/12/2017 05:05:50

Hi Everyone, I have caught this fish in South Myanmar, Tanintharyi Division, in the Dawei River bassin, on a dry fly. It looks similar to Opsarius barna, except that the number of stripes is different (5 black stripes + 1 black spot before the tail on my fish versus 8 on one of the fish picture in the database). Anybody that could help identify this fish? Thanks.

Isdang Bato or Bagets
Posted on: 07/12/2017 05:03:03

It is wide, about a foot long,Thicker meat than Tilapia, black, and made into fillets. It was first seen in local markets in the early 1980s and was cheaper than most fishes made into fillets- even cheaper than Labahita. What is it? The vendors call it Baget or Isdang Bato It has white meat. I don't know if they call it by another name in different places. I found the meat more delicious so I wondered why it was sold so cheap.

I bought this beautiful fish from a supplier in Vietnam 2 days ago. It seems to have adopted well in my 250 gallon tank that houses 17 species of fish including docile butterfly fish to tangs and decently behaving triggerfish! But all attempts of trying to ID him on the internet has not been successful. Anybody knows what it is?

Hi, can anyone help id this fish? I haven't been able to find it in any of the books I have. The photo was taken in Tulamben, Bali. It looks very much like a pink anemonefish (amphiprion perideraion), one with white spots instead of a white bar. TIA.

Table name and column name for Bayesian LWR estimates?
Posted on: 29/08/2017 04:41:32

Hi, I am using Rfishbase to obtain data for a subset of fish species. I am particularly looking for LWR estimates. While I have been able to identify the table and column name for LWR a and b values, I cannot find the parameter name for the Bayesian LWR obtained by Froese et al. (2014). Could you please facilitate the name of the table and column for these values?

How to download species occurence records (the point data, latitude and longitude) from FishBase or use rfishbase to download this information?
Posted on: 28/08/2017 09:43:11

I'm trying to download the species occurrence records (the latitude and the longitude) from FishBase. However, I don't know how to download batches of georeferences from the website. Besides, I try to use the occurrence() in R package of rfishbase to download the georeference of a species or list of species, however, the tutorial of rfishbase said that the occurrence table has been dropped by FishBase and this function now returns a stop message. Could anyone please lend me a hand? Thanks!

Help identifying florida fish
Posted on: 31/05/2017 02:53:07

I went saltwater fishing for the first time, east coast south florida on a pier, and caught this fish. I was told that it was a sand perch at the time and that it was delicious. After looking online it looks nothing like a sand perch but I cant find out what it is. As far as I found it looks like something between a jack and a snapper but nothing i found has those distinctive bars. Any help identifying it would be great. P. S. The fish was indeed delicious.

Hi, I saw on the WorldFish Center's website that you can become a FishBase Coordinator but I don't know how to become one. I'd like to become one in Haiti because I am going there to start a coral reef restoration project in about a week and the printouts they provide to the coordinators would be very helpful to me. If anyone knows how to become a FishBase Coordinator, please let me know. Thanks!

I'm working on a species list for the Phuket and Phang Nga region (Andaman coast) of Thailand. Initially it's for my own personal field guide and website. After that .... who knows! Does anyone have something like that already. I'm especially interested as a seed listing the species that are likely to hang around the marina pontoons where I have my boat. Fishermen from Siberia made a awesome fan film.
Posted on: 03/03/2017 03:00:38

Fishermen from Bratsk (Siberia) made a fan film to Pro Pilkki 2 ('99), a classical Finnish winter fishing simulator. "We believe Pro ??Pilkki 2 to be the best winter fishing simulator. We could not pass it and played Pro Pilkki in real life. This was so much fun that we decided to share it with you. Happy viewing! "- this was a description to an unusual video from Bratks fishermen that Internet recently saw. What is it about? Pro Pilkki 2 is a well-known Finnish winter fishing simulator, an extremely popular online game. Players around the world arrange online championships and competitions in fishing. Bratsk guys decided to make an "a la Bratsk" version, and shot a film. They borrowed only music and some sounds from the original game. The rest was redrawn, re-voiced and shot in Bratsk by fishermen, not by professionals film-makers. "Before we got started, we of course contacted the creators of the game. The Finns were thrilled at our idea. They gave permission to use music, sounds and everything that could help, - says Anatoly Kolesnik, one of the film-makers. - Once we laid out the general concept video, we starget shooting. We got on the ice on January 21st, when it was -28°C". When general scenes and the holes were shot, the most painstaking work began. We had to adapt the scenes to the game. The most difficult part was working with the pictures for the menu: we had to draw all the icons from scratch. "We've been working hard on each item for a whole month, - says Anatoly, - Of course, none of of us was a professional artist, we were just doing our best. When we needed to draw a locker - we had to make a photo in a furniture store, and only after that we could draw the picture. Next was the film editing and voicework." As a result, the video was so realistic that at times you do not understand whether it is a game, fishing video or just a video of someone playing. Game fans appreciated the parody: the video got almost 100,000 views within a couple of days. Glowing comments were posted by fans of the game around the world, as well as other people. The creators of the original game also posted enthusiastic comments to the video: "Absolutely AMAZING video! You just can not understand how I feel now! Smiling and laughing, what a wonderful piece of art! Excellent! Thanks for making this! " - wrote a creator of the game Mikko Happo. After recording the interview, Anatoly Kolesnik said that what's more important, the film was to show that one could and should live in Bratsk. The city is a nice place for everyone to live a good life, have a good rest, and carry out daring ideas. One only needs to wish!

Help to ID a second damselfish
Posted on: 22/02/2017 02:07:18

I took this pictures in September 2016 at Chumbe Island, Zanzibar. The dark base of the pectoral fin leads me to Pomacentrus alexanderae. But the range was given to Indonesia near to Taiwan & Ryuk. Another possibility could be a Pomacentrus indicus. But also the range doesn't fit properly. The question is: is itz one of the two named species or is there another species which fits better to my images?

I took this pictures in September 2016 at Chumbe Island, Zanzibar. In my reference book: Coral Reef Fishes from Ewand Lieske and Robert Myers, third printing and first revised edition 2002 I found in table 88, Nr. 10: Stegastes pelicieri - Mauritian gregory instead of the yellow ends of the dorsal and caudal fin. But my check at fishbase give me the information that this species was only reported at Mauritius and Reunion. My question: Is it a Stegastes pelicieri or what else?
