Dear FishBase Forum users,

Welcome to our new and improved site!

In the past, spammers have succeeded in making the forum unusable. Thus, in our aspiration to keep the site as simple as possible yet functional, we came up with this new version protected by a captcha system. We have checked and cleaned the database, keeping all good postings and pictures. However, note that the record numbers are tentative, we may need to change them in the coming months, and that the site is without registration at the moment. Please bear with us as we continuously develop this site to maximize service to fish enthusiasts all over the world. Feel free to comment on this version and make suggestions for improvements.

Lastly, we would like to clarify that the forum is for technical comments and inquiries that need scientific responses from experts in our team or other entities/groups that wish to share their knowledge on the subject at hand. If you wish to express your thoughts about our website and/or provide comments on our work, which don't necessarily need a response, then you may use our Guestbook for that purpose.

Enjoy the forum. Ü

Our very best regards,
FishBase

Miss identification of grouper found in the Red Sea
Posted on: 23/07/2014 02:18:32

The photo attached is of a fish with the common name in Arabic Najil which we caught in the Read Sea in 2014. Najil, according to FishBase is Plectropomus pessuliferus, however it is not the same in appearance. The fish on the photo is very sought after in the Middle East, however I was until now unable to correctly identify it with certainty. I was suspecting it could be Epinephelus guttatus, however it seems as if they do not exist in the Red Sea.I have the Smiths Sea Fishes, 1986, however cannot find any rock cod or grouper that resembles it. I do not have the fin formula.
