  Etymology of Generic name : 
 
Named for its transparent membrane-like head covering (‘‘hymen head’’) and fragile nature of head bones (Ref. 100825). Greek, hymen = membrane + Greek,kephale = head (Ref. 45335).
Etymology of specific name : 
 
Name from Latin 'maculis' meaning spot and 'cauda' for tail; referring to the distinctive line of melanophores along the mid-lateral line anteriorly on the tail.
