Permanently invalid, preoccupied by Clupea fasciata Lacep├Ęde 1803 after Eschmeyer (CofF 1998: Ref. 26282). Questionably a synonym of Alosa aestivalis (Mitchill 1814) .
  Etymology of Generic name : 
Latin, clupea = sardine, derived from Clupeus = shield; doubtless a reference to the scales covering the body of the fish + Greek, odous = teeth (Ref. 45335).
