FISH DISEASE
Posted on: 01/12/2016 12:28:22

My Congo Tetras seem to be healthy overall, but lately,1 of them has started to breathe heavily by constantly opening and closing its mouth. I've now noticed a second and 3 fish displaying the same symptoms. They are still eating and swimming well. I've had them for close to 2 years with no problems. They are fed a varied diet and no other fish in the tank show these effects. They are in a 90 gal. aquarium with Rainbow fish and 2 Angels. Any ideas what could cause this issue????

Hi, firstly, I am a newbie to scuba diving and I saw two fish recently in the Bohol sea in the Philippines. I have searched the database and found similar fish to the two I saw. Picture 1 I believe is a blow-fish, picture 2 was identified as a Lion fish. Can someone direct me to the correct species of these? Many thanks. Brian

Is there any commercial aquaculture facilities raising Pseudoscaphirhynchus hermanni? I hear conflicting reports that they are extinct and I also hear they are being successfully captive raised. I am also curious about Pseudoscaphirhynchus kaufmanni as well. both are smaller species of the sturgeon family I believe.

This weekend this alleged scorpionfish was caught in Norway during a fishing tournament. Nobody seems to know what species it is, it's never been seen in Norway before, but some people say it could possibly be a black scorpionfish (Scorpaena porcus), but nobody knows for sure and would like some expert on Scorpaenidae to give their opinion. Anyone here have any idea?

Identifying a cichlid so we know what to feed it
Posted on: 19/08/2016 03:19:32

My kid was given "Fred and George" 2 x 2cm cichlids a couple years ago. Absolutely adores them. They ate the guppies, we are on our third larger tank, and they are about 20-22 cm long nose to tail. If I knew what kind of cichlid they were, I'd feel better about what to feed them (right now it is medium pellets, with the occasional whole leaf of organic butter lettuce). They dig the pebbles like puppies, are aggressive with each other to the point we separated them in the tank. They are primarily silver with black shading and a yellow-greenish shimmer. Fred has more blue tones on her face and green eyes. George has yellow eyes and gets "mad lines" on his head sometimes. The tips and edges of their fins and tails turn reddish sometimes. Any clues appreciated.

identification of an unusual Texas Gulf reef fish.
Posted on: 01/06/2016 07:18:01

Some years ago I caught a torpedo shaped reef fish by accident while fishing for Red Snapper near the Flower Garden reef system. Ir was about 2!/3 inches long, completely chocolate colored except for its cherry red lips. I did not keep it but returned it to the water unharmed as I suspected the fish might be extremely rare. I did not have a camera with me at the time. I have not found any similar fish described in any Gulf fish documents going back to the 1800s. Anyone have any ideas on this?

Fibramia thermalis vs Ostorhinchus thermalis
Posted on: 20/05/2016 03:54:53

Hello! I would like to ask for clarification between two species name. I was working on Apogon thermalis' history of naming and I encountered that it was already been noted that it is a synonym of Fibramia thermalis (according to Fishbase). However, I also encountered in World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) that Apogon thermalis is a synonym of Ostorhinchus thermalis. The website has based this status also from Fishbase. The problem is when I double checked in Fishbase, I found out that Ostorhinchus thermalis is also a synonym of Apogon thermalis. Please see attached photo. Thank you very much!

We saw at least 4 different species and I have only been able to identify one (Streaky rockskipper, which I will have to get certified in a later mail) even though I've browsed through the entire blenny-section of FishBase at least 5 times... So I'll send photos of each of my unknowns, each in its own mail to avoid confusion. Cheers Pia Öberg, Uppsala, Sweden

ID of new tetras species
Posted on: 23/04/2016 05:39:18

Hi everyone ! First of all, I'll apologize for my bad english, I'm a young frenchman. Then, while surfing the web, most particularly thai and japanese websites, i've found several pictures of really beautiful tetras, but as I've never seen them before and as I can't read those languages, I can't id them. I find similarities with Hyphessobrycon, Inpaichthys, Axelrodia and Hemmigrammus genus, so I'm lost.. I've got a lot of tanks projects, and I wanted to know the id of those fishes to determine in which one they will geographically be at their place, if luckily I find them one day. Posted on: 24/02/2016 12:53:04

Hi, could anyone point me to some basic reproductive data for the sharp-nosed tigerfish (Rhyncopelates oxyrhynchus) or silver grunter (Mesopristes argenteus). I'm after data on egg size, fecundity and more general life history information (migration etc.), and not having much luck. Any advice appreciated. regards

Is this a roundbelly cowfish? (Lactoria diaphana)
Posted on: 17/01/2016 10:19:58

We found this dried out fish while on a beach on Anna Maria Island, Florida. That is along the Gulf coast about 40 miles south of Tampa. We think it looks most like a Roundbelly Cowfish but are looking for someone with more knowledge. Fishbase.org indicates that the Lactoria diaphana isn't found in Florida though, so we aren't so sure if we're right. Thanks for any thoughts.

Could be a Poecilia wingei?
Posted on: 05/01/2016 03:53:50

I colected some of this individuals in octuber 2015 in a stream in the southern part of Mexico (Chiapas). It is a place very close to the border with Guatemala. I colected with electrofishing. I collected near the riparian vegetation. Very slow current (0.53 m / s) at a depth of 60-70 cm. 23 ªC.In april I was in the same site, but I didn't collected this species. Probably an introduction? There is no records for Mexico in fishnet2 neither in Miller 2009. For the color patter it seems to be similar to P. wingei. With guidance the book of Miller 2009 I tryied to reach a identification within the sphenops complex, but it seems no to fit into this group. I'ill appreciate your help in this identification Thanks!
