are these two goatfish from Indonesia the same species?
Posted on: 10/12/2015 10:24:07

I have tentatively identified the two pictured fish from Buton Island, Indonesia, as the doublebar goatfish, Parupeneus crassilabris. However one clearly has a spine at the top of the operculum, while the other is absent any spine. Could someone please confirm if these are the same species, or if not, what their identifications are?

picture to go with Topic 6371
Posted on: 27/11/2015 05:01:33

The original picture I tried to upload must have been too large. Here's a cropped version. My query is repeated below. ============================= The attached picture was taken at a fish market on Buton Island, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. I'm curious whether this fish could be the golden grouper, Saloptia powelli -- especially since Buton Island would be considerably outside the stated range for this fish. If not, what species is it? I really appreciate the help that FishBase offers, since my training is in linguistics.

Hello all the Paracanthurus hepatus in Pulau Weh, NW Indonesia have these white underbellies. Anyone know the reason? Season (April), gender, different species ? tia p.s. I see Fishbase has a user photo "France, Aquarium specimen, Indian Ocean morph, by Muséum-Aquarium de Nancy - D. Can anyone ID this "rockskipper"?
Posted on: 11/11/2015 06:51:42

Found on flat dead coral beach, very shallow water (1 to 1,5 dm) in northern Makadi Bay (a few km South of Hurghada), NW Red Sea, Egypt. They seemed to be common but somewhat shy. Not easy to photograph, but I got at least one female and one male on pix. Size appr 9 - 13 cm but it's hard to remember correctly. I thought it might be Istiblennus rivulatus, but can't tell since photographs in FishBase might not be good enough to compare with live specimens, and description is scant. Photo on net are even more scarce except for 3 photos of 1 individual from an aquarium site and those doesn't resemble the FishBase photos at all. I'm stumped! Please help... need identification of Indonesian fish, possibly a Gymnocranius species
Posted on: 24/10/2015 05:16:04

I'm a linguist, but I've gotten into fish identification because of work on a dictionary for an indigenous language of Indonesia. The uploaded picture was taken at a fish market on Buton Island, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. It seems to be most similar to the underdescribed "Gymnocranius sp." under the name "blacknape large-eye bream" in an FAO publication. However, instead of scales of the back having a "prominent basal blackish spot" the scales appear instead to have a blackish margin, while scales on the side below the lateral line have a yellow margin. Also, according to FAO this species not recorded from Sulawesi. I would appreciate any help in further identifying this fish.

Can you please identify the name of this fish with this snub head
Posted on: 21/10/2015 05:06:38

These fish have been fishing in one of the beaches of the city of Tangier Morocco on the Mediterranean coast, about 120 meters from the a rocky beach, This shows that it is very similar to a red porgy fish except the strange shape of her mouth that really made us wonder about the name, Is this fish is one of the types of red porgy fish ? Is this a red porgy fish by congenital malformation in her head ? Is this fish is another type of fishs , not a red porgy fish ? If you have further questions this my email : [email protected]

ID of fish in watercolour by Danish artist around 1900

Dear members, I´d like some help in identifying these fish, drawn and painted around 1900 by a Danish artist otherwise known for correct (but usually much more detailed), renderings of overland animals and plants. 1) can the species be identified, generally or even very specifically? 2) can something be said about the geographical area of the species? Is it European, or Asian, for example? 3) is the surrounding environment of plants likely, or a fantasy? Just a bit of clarification concerning these questions would be very welcome. Posted on: 21/09/2015 03:14:12

I dont know if i am not searching correctly online for any record of a knows species of half beak that lives in freshwater in Southern Africa, but i cant seam to find any, in this image that i will upload are two half beaks, in the small lake i found them in there are no others bigger than them, they are no more than 13cm long, so i presume that they are adults, there are thousands of them in this small lake west of the ocean and a town called Vilanculos in Mozambique, there are dozens of other lakes around, some big some small, and some are connected to streams, but this lake in particular that has the half beaks in not connected to any streams of rivers, it is its own body of water, Your help will be greatly appreciated as i have spent many nights awake trying to find out exactly what it is i thought it could be (Zenarchopterus dispar) but looks different

Hi, recently I enjoyed diving in Sri Lanka. As always after a diving holiday I end up with quite some video's (or pictures extracted from them) with fish I can't get identified. These pictures are taken in Trincomalee and show some kind of scorpionfish. My wild guess would be "parascorpaena picta". Can anyone confirm or correct ? I upload several pictures from several dives because I believe they are all the same species. If anyone is interested, I have a video of one "walking" or "humping" (the one from pictures 452_...).

Fish identification Sri Lanka

Hi, recently I enjoyed diving in Sri Lanka. As always after a diving holiday I end up with quite some video's (or pictures extracted from them) with fish I can't get identified. These pictures are taken during a night dive on the French Garden Reef in Uppuveli (Trincomalee). I have no idea what this fish is. The pictures from a distant show a light grey almost silver fish with 3 broad black stripes over its back (which is about to be disturbed by what I believe is "Parupeneus barberinus"). The pictures up close show a darker grey fish, and the black areas have turned mossy green. It has spiny dorsal fins from neck to tail, but only when agitated (third and fourth picture). Can anyone take a look and identify ?

These pictures are taken on a night dive at French Garden Reef in Uppuveli (Trincomalee) from a fish of which I have no idea at all. It is a long grey fish, with short white stripes containing a black dot. It has a head like a dog or a fox and a wide-ended tail going from white to almost black which is 1/3rd of its whole body. Can anyone take a look at this weirdo and identify it ?

Definition of latitudinal zones on Fishbase??
Posted on: 13/04/2015 11:03:09

Many species have known latitudes in which they live, but many are also given the classification of 'temperate' or 'tropical'. Does this relate to the general area in which they are most common, or the temperature range of the water, or is it less well defined than that? Would love if someone can help!

Getting "Fisheries" information from Fishbase
Posted on: 01/04/2015 07:27:01

Hi, I am trying to find a way to get "Fisheries" information for nearly 900 species to see whether they are commercially fished or not. I couldn't find any way to access the data unless I search each species manually which takes ages! Is there any way to access this data on the Fishbase website? I even thought of ordering a DVD hoping that it contains the information in a better searchable format, but the DVD seems not to be updated from 2004. Thanks in advance for any help/suggestion.
