Stone fish?
Posted on: 17/12/2012 06:27:28

Diving in Punta, Southern Leyte, Philippines we encountered in 12m depth on a large sandy patch this fish, which we identified as a Stone fish. Back at base we had people disputing that and rather seeing a Wasp fish in this. More research found as a potential species a Dampier Stone fish. Any opinions?

Can anyone ID this Fish's 'egg basket'
Posted on: 08/11/2012 05:51:39

I bought this wonderful white 'egg basket' from a shop that sold exotic sea shells - mainly from the Pacific Islands - Phillipines area. The shop closed many years ago and as the attached photo appears on 'Flickr' and I have had so many queries about it, we'd all love to know the name of the fish that produced it. Woven with a mulitude of thousands of extremely fine strong filaments - the structure tapers at the end into a loose 'tuft' of filaments. This one is 30cm long and 4cm wide at the neck. Very light in weight and firm to the touch. Thank you

Fish name
Posted on: 25/10/2012 06:07:55

My son has been given a fish by a family member that passed away. The person that gave it to him thinks it may be called a Opsalotto (sp?) but we can not find anything named that. It is a small blackish fish with two small front legs, it has been fed shrimp pellets. It is kept in a heated tank with rocks on the bottom but it is not a lizard as it is swimming in the water. Can anyone help me?

Oxycheilinus orientalis vs. digramma
Posted on: 13/09/2012 09:27:35

Hi there, I was looking for a little help in regards to IDs and distributions for these species. I am currently working on some fish IDs from the Chagos archipelago. Previously, we were identifying the Oxycheilinus we saw as either O. orientalis or O. digramma based on ID books from the Maldives and information on fishbase indicating that both species occurred there. However, recently fishbase has updated and now apparently O. digramma is the only species that occurs at Chagos. I was wondering if someone would be able to give me some more information on the distributions, why they have suddenly changed, and what the differences are between these two species. I have included some screen grabs from the footage I am viewing. In both images the Oxycheilinus are in the foreground. Kind regards, Robert Sanzogni.

what fish would lay their eggs on a larimar rock, that can only be mined in the dominican republic.?
Posted on: 03/08/2012 05:34:26

the bahoruco national park is the only place you can mine larimar, and it has 1 river there called 'Yaque del Norte'. please correct me if im wrong with any details? so im guessing its a fresh water fiah, that would also explain laying eggs on gravel/rocks etc. the eggs of this fish managed to stay out in the dry, in a carrrier bag for about 2 weeks, and still hatch when the rock was put back in tap water? i was astonished as i got the larimar rock, looked freshly mined/picked up from a gravel pit somewhere. went to put it in water to make the blue color come out, and the fish started to swin around? i left them in the hotel in a bowl, but would love to know what fish they were if anyone can help?

Shark Scales: Material Request
Posted on: 25/07/2012 09:13:52

I'm currently researching the ultrasculpture of shark scales, employing CFD to model flow over these rough surfaces. Some sharks such as the Bonnet Hammerhead and Sandbar have polygonal ridges ornamenting the surface of the scale, and this is what I'm looking to study. If you know where I can get samples of skin from either of these species or any other where this kind of ornamentation is observed I would be very keen to hear from you.

Hello. I am trying to identify the species in the photograph attached. According to the knowledge I have this fish was caught in Australia in a closed freshwater system with other native wild species in cohabitation. I would like to know if it is an introduced species, invasive or a previously unknown type of native species. Thanks for your time. I need to know if this occurs in other populations. Please email me if you have observed red pelvic spine coloration (or any red coloration generally) in brook stickleback you have seen/studied. Hi there, the following picture was taken in the Red Sea - Sharm el Sheikh (Far Garden Reef), 09.04.2012. I saw a lot of jellyfish with this little pink, nearly transparent fish. Inside and round the jellyfish. I thik it is a kind of symbiose between aurelia aurita and the fish. Sometimes there was a second fish in the jellyfish - a little bit darker (maybe male or female) Can somebody tell me what kind of fish this is? Best regards and thx, Christoph Bausch

I have school of this fish. But one of them has a much thinner black band. I often read the band are a good indication between Corydoras adolfi and duplicareus. I have suspicion it may just a nature variety of duplicareus or hybrid since the band is not thin either but in-between with a inner grey out area below the skin which seems extend to half the body when view at and angle. Is there a more scientific way to identify their differences ?

while snorkeling off a beach in Bequia in the Grenadines last week I observed what must have been, based on shape, size and pattern, a sharptail eel. However it differed from all the pictures I have seen in that it was snow white with black spots. I watched it carefullly for several minutes from a distance of no more than 3 feet and carefully noted the color and pattern of spots whiich looked very much like fat black rectangles wtih the same pattern of distribution as the pictures I have seen of of darker Sharptails with white or cream colored spots. Unfortunately I did not have a camera.

Fish with small flippers/legs
Posted on: 13/03/2012 06:21:26

Hi there, My friend and I were swimming off the beach in Cauye Caulker, Belize, and we found this small fish-like creature. He was perhaps the length of my hand, but it had small little flippers that it was using almost like the legs on a turtle - like it was walking. It's tail was very thick, and on either side of the tail there were what looked like fake eyes that were opening and closing. The head had two eyes and a pointy nose. But seriously, it almost looked like a small ray that had sprouted little hind legs. We really want to know what this was!!! Thanks!!

Israeli and Eygpitian name of fish
Posted on: 04/02/2012 07:30:52

On your web page for the Alectis alexandrina I beleie there is some confuson in the translations. The Hebrew common name is the "Ben Gurion Fish", this has been credited to Egypt on the page? I am not too sure that the Eygptian will want a local fish to be called " Ben Gurion". Locally, in Israel, the fish is called ben Gurion and Gajal or Kamal. The name give of Dabashtan may be the Egyptian name. I suggest that this be checked with the original contributor.

Help identifying a fish please
Posted on: 19/01/2012 06:09:15

Hello When snorkelling recently off the southern coast of Turkey I saw two fish floating horizontally at the surface that greatly ressembled pieces of seaweed in form and colour. when I approached to get a closer look the fish partially righted themselves to swim away but I saw them again later in the same horizontal position. I have no idea how to go about identifying this species and unfortunately I have no photos to show. Any help or guidance in my search would be great. Thanks

Fish id please (from historic photo)
Posted on: 19/01/2012 04:31:16

This is an early 1900's photo from the region of Les Escoumins, QC Canada. 69.362°W / 48.352°N My understanding is that the waters in the Saint Lawrence in that region are salty, but it is not known if the fish was caught in the Saint Lawrence or in one of the freshwater rivers flowing into the St.L nearby. Is it possible to identify the fish from this photo? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unknown Amblycipitidae from Kyrgyzstan
Posted on: 05/01/2012 07:53:08

This fish was caught in an first order mountain stream in the Ferghana region in southern Kyrgyzstan. I suggest that the fish is a member of the Amblycipitidae but as I'm not an expert, I'm not sure about that. Maybe somebody can help with family and genus. A picture of the specimen can be found here:
