Chromis analis breeding colours?
Posted on: 21/04/2019 11:27:11

I'm a working marine ecologist in Fiji, pretty good at fish ID. Just came across the attached fish on and outer reef slope bommie in Beqa Lagoon at about 7m depth. To me it looks a lot like Chromis analis, but the colour was bronze with an orange parch on the head. There were about 20 of these all togather on one patch of reef. Is it a breeding colouration or a fish I don't know? Note that photos were taken without flash with a point and shot camera, actual seen were much brighter than indicated here. All opinions welcome.

River fish from Ramganga River, Uttarakhand State, India
Posted on: 21/03/2019 03:19:20

Help requested from experts in identifying this fish, which was being preyed upon by a Lesser Fish Eagle. The Ramganga's most common large fish are the Mahseer and the Goonch, a catfish, but this one was different. All information about this fish would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Red Sea: another clownfish species?
Posted on: 19/03/2019 07:41:38

Description : Over the years I encountered occasionally a small (maybe 1cm - 4 cm) clownfish species (?) that is distinct from the abundant species Amphiprion bicinctus (also their juveniles, that as far as I have seen are just miniatures of the adults) by the following criteria: #1.: Second dorsal fin has white rim and black speck. #2.: Caudal fin detto #3.: Behaviour is very different: swimming around fast and nervous, bending the body and waving with fins. #4.: This fish was always alone in the anemone, not associated with grown up A. bicinctus as is often observed with juveniles ones. There are three photos in this Fishbase under Amphiprion bicinctus, that resemble the fish in the photo submitted by me: may it be because the photos are automatically attributed to A. bicinctus, since this is the only reported species from the Red Sea? Or did someone a systematic study, e.g. hatching the fish in aquarium and observed this marked variability in color, shape and behaviour from egg to adult? May this be a second, less abundand and poorly described species of clownfish that occurs in the Red Sea? Wolfgang

Fish ID - Threespot angelfish - Apolemichthys trimaculatus ???
Posted on: 13/02/2019 07:01:28

Hi. This fish was seen on a dive at Siaes tunnel, Palau (06-11-2019). It looks like the three spot angelfish, but it lacks the whitish colored anal fin. This fish had a bright yellow anal fin. The black edge of the fin is present. Is this a known color variation, or is it a similar looking (sub)species ? I will send the link to the youtube-video by email. Any suggestions ? Thank you !

Need ID for a brackish water Goby in Southern Vietnam mangrove
Posted on: 11/02/2019 11:52:33

I have caught a small goby in a brackish water body in Southern Vietnam (Near Vung Tau area). The area is swarm-like with mangrove trees. Attached is the picture. Could you please help me with the ID? My first guess would be Acentrogobius cyanomos due to the black color with light dots on its body.

Data over time
Posted on: 03/02/2019 03:10:37

I am an artist (OK, mostly a math teacher) working to portray environmental data visually. I am currently working on a project involving ocean health. I am trying to figure out how to download annual data from FishBase. It could be population of a particular species, annual catch data, or really anything that has one data point per year and at least 50 years of data. Any suggestions?
